Stonehenge (Wiltshire)
Stonehenge is the most visited and well known of the British prehistoric landmarks. It was originally a circular ditch with an internal bank and a single entrance. The circle was aligned with the midsummer sunrise, the midwinter sunset, and the most southerly rising and northerly setting of the moon. The sanctuary was later replaced with two circles of eighty ‘bluestones’, some weighing as much as four tons. These were transported from the Prescelly Mountains in Wales, 240 miles away. At a later period the bluestones were taken down and the enormous Sarsen stones were erected, having been transported from nearby Avebury.
